LISTENING

Listenin Skills

"The most important thing in communication is to hear what isn't being said. "

We were given two ears but only one mouth.

This is because God knew that listening was twice as hard as talking.

People need to practice and acquire skills to be good listeners, because a speaker cannot throw you information in the same manner that a dart player tosses a dart at a passive dartboard. Information is an intangible substance that must be sent by the speaker and received by an active listener.

How to Improve Your Listening Skills in College

Listening is a vital skill in all aspects of life. Being able to listen well will contribute to a persons overall success. Listening is an important skill for students to improve and develop while in college as they are preparing to enter the workforce. This article will outline several steps to improving your listening skills.

Instructions

01.Be prepared - Prior to going to class make sure to do the required reading for that day and review notes from previous lectures.k

02.Concentrate on the lecture itself, not the lecturer - Try not to let your self become distracted by the lecturer's or instructor's mannerisms, voice quality, or delivery technique. You should concentrate on what is said, not on how it is said.

How to Listen Well

Communicating properly has as much to do with listening as it does with talking to someone else. Learning how to be a good listener will help improve all of your relationships.

Instructions

01.When you are trying to talk to someone, it can be easy to tune out what they are saying and let your mind wander. Keeping your focus on the person talking, without interrupting them, has to be done on purpose. Looking at them will help you remember to listen and pay attention.

02.When it's your turn to talk, repeat what you think they were saying. This is important, because sometimes in communication the meaning can get lost in our interpretation. Repeating it as you understood it, asking if you understand what they meant, will give them the opportunity to correct any misunderstanding by rephrasing what they said so the point is clear. It will also keep you from misunderstanding the meaning and getting angry or hurt over it.

Ten Steps to Effective Listening

Ten Steps to Effective Listening

Teaching listening skills is one of the most difficult tasks for any ESL teacher. This is because successful listening skills are acquired over time and with lots of practice. It's frustrating for students because there are no rules as in grammar teaching. Speaking and writing also have very specific exercises that can lead to improved skills. This is not to say that there are not ways of improving listening skills, however they are difficult to quantify.
