English sentence structure is an easy task if you are native to the English language. Other nationalities, on the other hand, may find it challenging. In every sentence you will find a subject and a predicate. The subject will be a noun or pronoun and will be accompanied by an action verb. There may be helping verbs and prepositional phrases. Here's how to structure a sentence.
Instructions
01.In order to find the subject ask yourself who or what is doing something. For example, in the sentence “John is going to work” who is doing something? John. Therefore, John is the noun (subject).
02.In order to find the action verb you must ask yourself what is being done? In the sentence “Mary is eating an apple” what is being done? Mary (the noun) is eating (action verb) an apple. Eating is the action verb.
03.Sometimes a predicate will be two or three words instead of one. If an action will be taking place in the future you would say “John will be going to work tomorrow.” The predicate in this sentence is “will be going”.
04.Prepositional phrases may also be found in a sentence. Prepositional phrases allow writers to expand on their thoughts. In the sentence, “Caroline saw an ant on her plate” the prepositional phrase is “on her plate”. Most prepositional phrases can be found by asking yourself what the noun/verb did. In this sentence I would ask myself, “Caroline (noun) saw (verb) an ant ‘on her plate.’'
05.When constructing a sentence think about who or what you want to write about. Once you have your subject you need to determine what he, she or it is doing or is going to do. Then you can add prepositional phrases to fill in the rest of your sentence. Proper sentence structure examples can be found online. See Resources below.
