GRAMMAR

English Grammar

English Grammar

English grammar is a body of rules (grammar) specifying how phrases and sentences are constructed in the English language. Accounts of English grammar tend to fall into two groups: the descriptivist, which describes the grammatical system of English; and the prescriptivist, which does not describe English grammar but rather sets out a small list of social regulations that attempt to govern the linguistic behaviour of native speakers (see Linguistic prescription and Descriptive linguistics). Prescriptive grammar concerns itself with several open disputes in English grammar, often representing changes in usage over time.

How to Identify Nouns

Nouns are the first part of speech that we come across in any language. If a person in a foreign language situation knows some nouns then he/she is able to communicate somewhat. Nouns are the words that name things. We humans always need to name things that we use, see, and imagine.

Instructions

01.Look for the word in the text that names a person: aunt, ecologist, Robert, mother, child. A place: playground city living room, Arizona. A thing: moon, whale, chipmunk, White House, or idea: democracy, hope, century, impatience for example.

02.Concrete Noun: This names an object that occupies space or can be recognized by any of the senses. for example, salt, whisper, thunder, sand, scent.

How to Identify Noun Clauses

Just like the part of speech 'noun' naming the main actor of a sentence, a noun clause is a subordinate clause that is used as a noun within the main clause of a sentence.

Instructions

01.You can use a noun clause as a subject, a direct object, an indirect object, an object of a preposition, or a predicate nominative. EG 'Whatever you can learn about computers' will prove useful in the workplace. (noun clause as subject) You should take 'whichever computer classes are offered.' (noun clause as direct object).

Modal Verbs (modal auxiliaries)

Modal auxiliary verbs may sound difficult but in fact they're easy. They are invariable (no conjugation). And the main verb is always the "bare infinitive" (the infinitive without "to").

01.Can, Could, Be able to

Can, Could, Be able to are modal auxiliary verbs. Be able to is NOT an auxiliary verb (it uses the verb be as a main verb). We include be able to here for convenience.

02.Have to, Must, Must not/Mustn't

Must is a modal auxiliary verb. Have to is NOT an auxiliary verb (it uses the verb have as a main verb). We include have to here for convenience.

How to Use Interjections in a Sentence

There are eight parts of speech and interjections are one of them. The others are nouns, pronouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, prepositions and conjunctions. An interjection is a word that expresses emotions and has no connection or relationship grammatically to the rest of the sentence. In other words, you can either use it in a sentence or make it a sentence by itself.

Instructions

01.Express your feelings in your writing by using an interjection. When you use interjections to express strong feelings, it should stand-alone and an exclamation point follows. Examples are "Oh, no!" or "Ouch!"
